When To Begin?

Top Three Reasons to Get Started on the College Application Process Now

When should I start jumping into the college app process? Every year, as the junior year ends and the college application season begins, this is the one question I always get from rising seniors. And my answer is always the same – start early and start now. Let me cut to the chase and explain why.

Reason # 1 – Avoid Getting Overwhelmed During an Already Busy Senior Year

Your senior year will get busy fast. Between rigorous AP classes, possible last-minute standardized testing, extracurricular involvement, and the endless senior activities you will no doubt be juggling, you will be hard-pressed to find the time and effort it takes to put together polished, organized, and impactful college applications. So, take the time now to build your list of schools you want to apply to, identify their requirements, highlight their application deadlines, and begin the process of brainstorming and crafting your essays. By starting early, you will avoid getting overwhelmed by everything else you will have going on. Most importantly, you will be able to devote the time needed to reflect on what you genuinely want in a college experience, to find the schools that best fit you, and to assemble outstanding college apps you are proud of.

Reasons #2 – Have Time to Apply to All of the Schools on Your List

More likely than not, you want to apply to several schools, not just one or a few. If that describes you, then all the more reason to start on your college apps now. Take the essay requirement as an example. Many of the schools on your list will not just require a personal statement but will also require supplemental essays. This means that you will have to craft multiple essays on various subjects for different schools. This process can quickly become daunting and discourage you from applying to the schools you have your heart set on that are an excellent fit for you. Don’t let volume get the better of you. Start working on your apps early on to avoid eliminating schools from your list or submitting sub-par applications for no other reason than running out of time

Reason #3 – More “Bang for Your Buck”

The earlier you start on your college apps, the closer you will be to having near-final essay drafts that you can provide to teachers and other supporters who will write letters of recommendation on your behalf. Besides having actual face-time with your recommenders, which can be difficult for many reasons, what better way for them to get to know you than to read about you personally – your background, your inspirations, your accomplishments, and your goals. Your essays will give your supporters the insight about you that will help them write meaningful letters of recommendation that are unique to you and your story.
